On The Verge: The Weekend in View

Written By Chris Hoskins

Snow creeps in, the air grows still and crisp, and winter sets up home. Smoke snakes from chimneys, and the quiet of night grows unsettling for attentive, late night ears. Winter’s a time of closed-comforts; it’s a dormancy within walls that’s best spent with close family and friends. It’s a primal huddle together in the coldest of seasons.

But not for us.

Not for San Diego.

Not in a city where the sun only softens.

This weekend, we’ll be out because the streets are calling our name. From PB, to Liberty Station, Petco Park and beyond, we’ll be Southern California bundled (sleeves, likely pants) and enjoying the season in San Diego style.

Yule logs ignite and cookies hit nationwide ovens as we take to the streets at San Diego’s Santa Run—featuring 1-mile to 5K options that welcome kids, families, and pet owners alike. Register early to get your own Sunny Santa Suit (there’s no sense running in any sweaty alternative) along with your drink ticket for a Santa hoedown to follow. Chum with newfound friends at the Pacific Beach Holiday Parade shortly thereafter, and enjoy a December race like only our city can deliver.

Get your post-sun siesta in before the night draws you back to the streets, this time to Liberty Station for the area’s annual Holiday Block Party. Running through 7:30 PM, pop-up shops spring up to offer holiday gift-giving options, while carolers and seasonal music fills the air. Grab a bite, cross another item of that holiday list, and be merry for the spectacular shores that set another distinctive holiday stage.

Sunday brings final (but not last) opportunity to hit the streets with a one-two punch for us and our four-legged friends. Join Everywon San Diego and choose your own cause for your 5K investment—a great post-weekend, calorie burn, then follow-up with a Holiday Pet Parade in the Gaslamp to strut your stuff!

Events and Happenings

With so much glitz across our city, it’s easy to lose sight of its hallmarks, and if you haven’t had time to experience The San Diego Bay Parade of Lights until now, this and next weekend are prime opportunity. In tribute to the San Diego Zoo’s 100-year celebration, expect an array of unexpected, seafarers—a wild twist on this San Diego tradition. Event proceeds benefit local, as do many of those in this weekend’s best draws, so get out and enjoy the season, Verge. Give, celebrate, and love.

It's not how much we give but how much love we put into giving.
