On The Verge: The Weekend in View

Written By Chris Hoskins

Snow has begun to creep in across parts of the country but not San Diego. A winter in our city pales in comparison, but we rival the best out there when it comes to the holidays. Celebrate local and enjoy the season with family and friends because the weeks ahead are overflowing with festivity across our streets, parks, and communities. Ahhhh… Southern California at its best!

You don’t have too far to travel this weekend—just up the hill to be exact—for the 53rd annual North Park Toyland Parade & Festival, spanning from Utah to Iowa, across University Avenue. Sleep in this Saturday then join us out. Events start at 11:00 AM and run through 3:00. Grab a bite at one of the many participating vendors and enjoy the many performances around the parade and community tree lighting.

Next step on the Holiday Express, make your way to a Christmas Village in Little Italy—the timing’s too perfect to not. With events running from 4:00-8:00 PM, you can get a bit of holiday shopping in, grab some Italian, and enjoy live music, entertainment, holiday treats, plus a 25-foot poinsettia tower and 5:30 tree lighting. All this, and it’s still only early evening.

Wind down by circling for home and pit stopping at Balboa Park’s December Nights. The park’s signature event draws thousands of visitors from across the region; it’s a must for any newcomers to the city, and it’s a seasonal staple for the rest of us. And when all’s said and done, twinkling lights still dancing in your eyes, maybe you’ll round out the evening with a stop at Extraordinary Desserts? You know … because you’re in the area and all.

Any way you slice it, the season of giving is here. So get out there and give a bit of yourself this weekend, Verge. Share the spirit in true San Diego style.

Pet-Centric Picks

Nothing warms the heart more than our furry best friends, so when opportunity arises to bring them along, we snatch up our leashes and roll. This weekend, Liberty Station will host an extra special event that offers holiday cheer and unites military families with homeless pets. Bring your best buddy along, get your holiday photos taken, and enjoy games, food, and more. Whether you’re digging the seasonal cheer or would rather a brew or even yoga with your pup, San Diego has it and more just waiting for you!

Events and Happenings

Choose to be fleet of foot for good cause or just kick back for a roaring good time of laughter. Either route taken, you live in the right place. Balance is everything and our city has it without bounds. Sweat it out and donate to families and children in need or just indulge in some edgy, outlandish comedy that’s sure to ruffle some feathers. Find what fuels you, feed it, and make it a memorable weekend.

Blessed is the season which engages the whole world in a conspiracy of love.
